The Loft | Free Online Writing Community For Indie Authors and Creatives

Imagine if the person who workshopped your first chapter with you ends up being the person to edit your debut?
And the designer you bond with over a late-night chat becomes your go-to cover artist for every book after that?

Even better — you find friends for life along the way. People who know what it's like to create in this space, who'll be your cheerleaders, your accountability buddies, your genuine supporters.

The Loft is a free writing community for indie authors and publishing creatives. It's an online community for people who work with books – writers at every stage, and the editors, designers, readers, and marketers who work alongside them.

Author groups and writing groups for indie authors are everywhere. Facebook groups, Discord servers, Reddit threads, Threads hashtags. And yet so many of us are still shouting into the void looking for friends.

The reality is, a lot of online writing communities fall into one of a few traps.

They’re either too big and noisy that no one really knows each other, or too quiet
that people lose interest.

They’re transactional. Full of people looking for any opportunity to drop a link to
their website and secure a new client.

Work is the primary focus, not real connection over a shared interest, or pursuit.

All of which is fine, for some people.
For a lot of us though, they’re too surface level – too practical for us storytellers who want to dig deep and share ideas, discuss plots, be a little whimsical, and uplift one another. For indie authors and writers working independently, they seem like they’ve got potential. In truth, they don't ease the feelings of isolation. They don't bolster your momentum or boost your confidence.

When something goes wrong with a chapter at 11pm, there's no one to message.
(Because no one is up promoting their business at that time of day!)

Who is This Creative Community For?

The Loft is built for two groups of people (who need each other more than they often realise!).

Writers and indie authors – at any stage. From hobbyists who write for the sheer love of it to serious authors working toward publication. If you've been creating solo, finishing chapters with no one to tell, or wobbling without a community to hold the thread, The Loft is for you. You don't need a finished manuscript. You don't need to be working toward traditional publishing. You just need to be someone who writes and wants to be around others who do the same.

Publishing creatives and professionals – editors, cover designers, sensitivity readers, marketers, arc readers, and anyone else who works with or around books. If you're an independent professional tired of doing it alone, or someone early in your career trying to find your people, The Loft is an online community for publishing professionals where those connections form naturally.

And whilst we always put friendships first, so much more good can come. A writer in The Loft might become a beta reader for someone else. A cover designer might find a first client because the sneak-peak chapter an author shared inspired them. The Loft is a space for friendships to form; and have the room to blossom into more.

What Makes The Loft Different?

The Loft is built around the belief that genuine connection is what we need – and what we all deserve. Yes, you may find collaborators here, but the goal is supportive, encouraging friendships first.

We have big plans for the community, but we want to grow slowly and intentionally. We believe that a smaller, warmer room is better than a big, empty one. A free writing community for indie authors where people know each other's names and WIPs and creative struggles is more valuable than a huge, noisy group where nobody really knows (or cares about) anyone.

It also means that culture matters. The Loft has community guidelines that protect that warmth – no performative self-promotion, no cold pitching, no drive-by posting with no intention to engage. This is a gathering space, not a marketplace.
