Northern Girlies
Book Club
The Northern Girlies Book Club is free online bookish community for women in the North of England.
We’re a wholesome, supportive, slightly chaotic, bunch who connected over our shared love of books but our friendships built on many more shared interests.
A long time ago, in a land far away…
Just kidding; it was 2024, in York.
Way back then, the Northern Girlies Book Club was just a twinkle in the eye of a reader who wanted a group of friends to cry fangirl with her over a certain eight-book fantasy series (iykyk). So she let herself dream a little, figured out how to use Discord, and when the NGBC server finally existed, she posted on TikTok and found her people.
Now we’re a 100(ish) strong community of readers who talk pretty much every day – about everything from our current reads and all-time faves to what we’re having for tea.
Drop in for a little escapism.
Stick around because
you’ve found your people.
Who is the NGBC for?
The Northern Girlies Book Club is for women in the North of England who are looking for a wholesome bookish community where they can talk about the books they love, share theories, and find friendships that will make it out of the group chat and into real life.
We specify Northern because we want to find friends who can get together in person without having to travel hundreds of miles. And our community is (as you may guess from the name) for the girlies so that we can create a safe space for women to enjoy books together.
That being said, we do have a couple of European members, a Pete, and non-binary and female-identifying folks are always welcome. All this to say, if you’re one of the girlies and you live up North (or you’re willing to travel) our virtual doors are open to you.
Where can you find the NGBC?
We’re on Discord! We have a community server with a whole bunch of channels where we get together for daily QOTDs, monthly book chats, quizzes (coming soon!) and more. Discord is a free platform that’s pretty easy to use once you’ve had a look around; and we’re always happy to help newbies figure things out!
Out in the world, you’ll find members of the NGBC throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire, Manchester, Liverpool, Middlesborough, Newcastle, Cumbria & beyond.
To date, we’ve only properly met in person once – at Fiction Fest 2026 – and even then it wasn’t all of us; but we have plans for a summer get together and hopefully a lot more in the future.
What do you read in the book club?
We have a diverse range of readers but we’ve definitely bonded over fantasy and romantasy ( if you're into Sarah J. Maas, Fourth Wing, or anything with magic and sprinkling of smut, you'll fit right in).
Our monthly book pick tends to fall into one of the above genres but we always have Buddy Reads open for people to read together in small groups – when the group pick isn’t something they’re in the mood for!
What’s the NGBC all about?
Truthfully, the NGBC is bigger than a book club. In the year since we’ve been established we've found so many other interests that we share, we’ve had quiz nights, done Hear Me Out cakes, as I write this, we’ve almost had a baby too!
What started as a book club has become a community that feels like one big group chat. Full of laughs, lore, inside jokes, questionable late night chaos, and a genuine appreciation for one another. I think we all know we’ve found our people; and I know we’d love for you to find yours too.
I asked the girlies for short testimonials about the community.
Here’s what they had to say:
